Why I Started a Photography School for Beginners

A Key to Finding Ikigai and Opening Doors to a New World

The Inspiration: My Parents and the Joy of Capturing Moments

As my parents have gotten older, traveling—something they always loved—has become more difficult. They used to send me photos from their trips via LINE. When you’re traveling, everything you see is a potential subject. Even without technical knowledge, just pressing the shutter and capturing a moment is a joy in itself. I even managed an Instagram account for them, posting their photos on their behalf.

However, I realized that for their generation, social media can be a daunting world. Navigating the interface is confusing, and the constant influx of messages and notifications can be overwhelming. Without basic digital literacy, there’s also the risk of scams. Yet, SNS is a powerful tool for connecting with the world instantly. This made me realize there’s a real need for something like an “Instagram for Absolute Beginners” course.

👇This is my parents’ Instagram, where I shared their photos exactly as they were captured. Here is a look at what it looks like:

Lately, since traveling has become difficult for them, they’ve been sending me photos of the sky or flowers from around the house via LINE—the most popular messaging app here in Japan..

My parents once wondered aloud, “Would these look even more beautiful with a real camera?” That was the spark. I realized there was a need for a “textbook” for those who don’t even know where the power button is. That is why I created the “Super Beginner Photography Course.”

Designed for the “Super Beginner”

Most photography tutorials start in the middle, skipping the “obvious” parts. My course starts from the absolute basics—identifying the shutter button and the power switch. It is designed for the “Super Beginner”—those even a step behind a regular beginner. I use simple language and large text so that seniors can read it comfortably (and I’m even planning a feature to allow users to adjust text sizes!).

I started this project because I want people to find their “Ikigai” (a sense of life purpose) through photography.

My Journey with Photography

Photography has been part of my life since I was 13. Over the years, I’ve worked in various roles: studio photographer, assistant to international photographers, advertising producer, and photography instructor.

Photography has introduced me to incredible people and acted as a key to doors I never knew existed. For me, it is a source of joy, a life-long passion, and a support system that has even helped me shape my own destiny.

It is never too late to start. With the rise of digital and mirrorless technology, photography has become more accessible than ever. If you can press a button, you can capture a moment. Everyone has their own unique sense of style, and capturing that one “lucky” timing is part of the magic.

Rooted in Real Experience: 5,300+ Consultations

This course is unique because it addresses what others ignore. Most textbooks skip “How to turn on the camera” because it varies by model or “should be obvious.”

But during my time working for a major camera manufacturer, I provided consultations for over 5,300 people, many of whom were “Super Beginners.” The most common question? “Where is the power switch?” Even experienced photographers occasionally forget the basics when they’re overwhelmed with new settings. I’ve also been asked fundamental questions like, “Do I really need an SD card to take a photo?”

I define a “Super Beginner” as someone in the stage of Before Purchase → During Purchase → After Purchase → Taking the First Shot. My experience directly assisting customers at a camera manufacturer allows me to understand and answer the exact questions people have when starting from zero.

Expanding the Circle of “Ikigai”

My goal is for everyone—including my own parents—to live a life fueled by the “Ikigai” that photography brings.

Whether you’re in your 40s, 60s, or beyond, it’s a wonderful hobby. I will be covering essential items like lens protection filters (to prevent scratches) and straps (to prevent accidental drops), which are crucial when you’re just starting out.

For those who have already gained beginner-level knowledge through this course or previous experience: You can also obtain a license to use this curriculum to start your own photography school. Please reach out to me regarding licensing details.

If you have a request for a specific topic, please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m here to help you in any way I can.

Let’s make life more joyful and purposeful through photography. Open the door to a new world you haven’t even imagined yet!

Find yours. Create ours. Ikigai together.
